Alton Craft Market – Better By Far

The Alton Craft Market is organised by Alton Lions Club (CIO) and is a strictly ‘makers market.’ It was established over 20 years ago and has become one of the best craft markets in Hampshire. It is held second Saturday of each month (excepting January and February) in the town centre and combines with the Hampshire Farmers Market to create the only locally produced and made food and craft market in the county.

Alton, in Hampshire, is a traditional English country market town with a history of outdoor markets reaching back to early Saxon times. Alton’s regular market was established more than one thousand years ago and is recorded as the most valuable market in England in the Domesday Book written in the reign of William the Conqueror.

In 1673 it was written about Alton ‘market on Saturdays, which is very great for provisions, where also are sold good store of living cattle’.  Although livestock are no longer bought and sold in Alton the thriving Makers’ Market provides unique and high-quality arts and crafts. The tradition of an outdoor market is maintained and meets in rain and shine throughout the year from March to December.

Alton Craft Market is well established and highly respected as all the stallholders are makers – a genuine Makers’ Market.  Beautifully hand-crafted gifts and accessories as well as stunning original artwork, fused glass, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and woodwork are on display. Customers comment on how much they enjoy talking with the designers and creators of the items on sale.

The Market is organised by Alton Lions Club (CIO) and ‘Adaliza’ (one of the Crafters) with pitch fees being used to support local charitable needs.

Market days are always busy as Hampshire Farmers Market is on the same day in the town centre and provides for an integrated event that significantly increases the retail offering in town.  Markets are usually held on the second Saturday of the month from 10 am to 2:30 pm.

New Stallholder applications are welcomed, and the key criteria is that products must be ‘Made by You’.  Please see ‘Become a Maker’ for terms and conditions and to complete an application form, if you would like to join us.
